Liverpool should consider a surprise move for Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey amid reports from the Daily Mail that he is nowhere nearer to signing a contract extension at the Emirates.
What’s the word?
The Wales international will come to the end of his current deal next summer, which means that the Gunners risk losing him on a free next year.
The Daily Mail states that manager Unai Emery is confident of coming to an agreement with Ramsey, but there are some doubts due to the fact that he is yet to put pen to paper despite lengthy negotiations.
If the midfielder decides to look elsewhere, then Liverpool should be waiting in the wings.
It may seem like an odd choice given how Jurgen Klopp has already strengthened his midfield this summer with Fabinho and Naby Keita.
However, the Reds need strength in depth if they want to challenge on all fronts this season.
How would Ramsey fit in?
On occasion, the Welshman, who is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, has played in an attacking midfield role or on the right, but centrally is where he works best.
For the 27-year-old to slot into Klopp’s team, it may result in captain Jordan Henderson being pushed out.
The midfielders have similar attributes and both have had inconsistent spells for their respective clubs.
It would be hard on Henderson given how impressively he ended the 2017-18 campaign for club and country.
Despite that, the extra bodies would give Liverpool a strong and creative midfield, as well as a decent bench to call upon to ensure that they arguably have the best options in that area of the pitch in the entire division.
It would be a huge shock if Ramsey left Arsenal to move to Merseyside, but it would be difficult for any player to turn down a chance to be part of Klopp’s revolution at Anfield.
