Young Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt impressed at the back for the Netherlands in their 3-0 friendly win against Portugal on Monday night, and Liverpool fans have told their club to sign the 6ft 2in teenager.
The starlet was earning just his fifth cap for his country as he lined up alongside Reds star Virgil van Dijk and Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake in a three-man defence, but he showed composure and maturity far beyond his years throughout.
As well as pocketing Euro 2016 winner and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and generally impressing from a defensive point of view and when in possession of the ball, the Ajax youngster also provided two assists for his nation at the other end of the pitch and could be a potential replacement at Anfield for Dejan Lovren, who is still unpopular with the fans because of his performances.
Liverpool supporters were quick to have their say on de Ligt’s display via social media, and while one said “sell Lovren, buy him”, another said “he is who we need at this club”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
