So good have Liverpool been this campaign, there are a number of players who could lay claim to being named the Premier League’s Player of the Year.
Sadio Mane, for example, has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in the top flight, whilst some people have backed Jordan Henderson for the award. Others, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold – with his 10 assists in the league – have done enough put themselves in the conversation as well.
Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…
However, according to Rio Ferdinand, one of those is not centre-back Virgil van Dijk. He told BT Sport (via The Mirror) that, although he thinks he is the best defender in the world, there are others such as Kevin de Bruyne and Jamie Vardy who are ahead of him this season.
This has got the Liverpool fans talking, and they are far from happy with his quotes. Plenty believe he has said this only because the Netherlands international is better than he was as a player.
It does seem a little bit harsh, in all fairness. Whilst Van Dijk is top quality, Ferdinand performed for Manchester United for a number of years during a time when they really were one of the best teams not just in the country, but in Europe. The 28-year-old currently at Liverpool will need to prove himself for a little while longer yet.
Some fans have also mentioned his comments on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a reason not to take him seriously.
Ferdinand, of course, was adamant that Solskjaer should be given the managerial position at Old Trafford following the Red Devils’ victory against PSG in the Champions League last season.
One fan, meanwhile, just thinks Ferdinand is funny.
Clearly, they don’t like anyone putting van Dijk down.
Meanwhile, this goal-machine says Liverpool are “aware” of him.
